FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Bridgetown, Barbados – Brescia University College from London, Canada continues its successful Girls LEAD camp in Barbados beginning for two weeks on Monday, July 8th as it welcomes another group of campers. Two sessions of 20 female primary school students will build self-confidence and leadership skills through a series of activities with guidance and mentoring from three trained counsellors and one staff member from Brescia.
Exploring their own leadership potential in a positive, welcoming, and empowering environment, the camp will run from July 8-12 and 15-19, 2013 at Ursuline Convent School. Dr. Colleen Hanycz, Principal at Brescia, says, “We are thrilled to see in Barbados the growing network among our alumnae, our current students and the local community of campers, friends and sponsors. The overwhelming success of GirlsLEAD International would not be possible without our sponsors, Summit International Bank Limited and Trident Insurance Company Limited, to whom we are very grateful. Their repeated generosity has assisted in offsetting the participation costs for our young campers and demonstrates their solid commitment to community, education and the formation of young leaders in Barbados.”
Students will be selected based on scores from the Barbados Secondary School Entrance Exam, facilitated by the Ministry of Education.
Camp programming is divided into the following three streams: promoting physical and mental health; enhancing self-awareness and building self-confidence; connecting with others; and making change. Campers will participate in outdoor activities, active games, discussion, and healthy food preparation. Programming for Girls LEAD is inspired by Brescia’s Foods and Nutrition program and academic disciplines such as Community Development and Leadership.
Girls LEAD launched at Brescia in 2008 and continues to expand each year, welcoming young girls aged seven through thirteeen. The camp also includes a second international chapter, where 36 young women from Hong Kong participate in the two-week long program at Brescia.
The camp wraps up with Open Day celebrations on July 19th from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m. at Ursuline Convent School. For more information on Girls LEAD at Brescia visit www.girlslead.ca.
