For Immediate Release
London, ON – On April 16th at a meeting of Brescia University College’s Council of Trustees, the appointment of a new Academic Dean was unanimously approved. Dr. Donna Rogers, currently Associate Dean Academic at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, will take up her new position at Brescia on July 1, 2013.
Dr. Rogers brings to this post at Brescia a great deal of administrative experience coupled with a passion for research and teaching and a successful track record of innovation and leading change. Her educational background is also stellar. She earned her Honours BA (Spanish and Latin) from the University of Waterloo, her MA from Western University (Spanish Language and Literature), and her PhD from the University of Toronto (Hispanic Languages and Literature), where she earned an Ontario Graduate Scholarship. She began her teaching career at Pennsylvania State University, where she served as an assistant and then associate professor, as Interim Department Head in Spanish, Italian and Portuguese, and as an active committee member on two dozen committees. In 1998 she moved to Middlebury College in Vermont, which is known for its intense undergraduate experience. Dalhousie University attracted her in 2003, where she has contributed to academic success in many ways during the past decade. She was promoted to Full Professor in 2007; was selected as Chair of the Department of Spanish in which capacity she served for two consecutive terms. She has also been Acting Chair of both Russian Studies and International Development Studies and was selected as Associate Dean Academic of Dalhousie’s Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences in 2011. She has devoted passion and energy to curriculum development, unit reviews, academic planning, internationalization, and the implementation of learning objectives.
Brescia’s Principal, Dr. Colleen Hanycz, who chaired the selection committee that recruited Rogers, notes that this new hire will result in significant strategic strength, creating an innovative opportunity for Brescia to continue to raise its profile to new levels. She says, “Dr. Rogers has established herself as a superb scholar, educator and administrator, demonstrating authentic leadership at each stage. Brescia continues to set for itself BOLD ambitions and we are convinced that Donna will be critical in advancing our innovation agenda.”
Dr. Rogers is equally excited about this new development in her career, adding, “I describe myself as a teacher first and foremost and this informs all the facets of my professional life, even as an active administrator. Teaching at a university, for me, is an open and ongoing conversation among students, colleagues, staff, administrators, alumnae, and the broader community. I am keenly looking forward to working with Brescia’s students, whom I have already observed to be committed and engaged.”
Co-ordinator of the Council of Trustees, Liz Hewitt, commends the search committee for finding such a strong candidate to fill this important academic position. Ms. Hewitt noted that, “Dr. John Mitchell, our outgoing Academic Dean, is highly respected in his role and a great leader. It is reassuring to know that Dr. Rogers will bring with her those same strengths and be a model to our students and to our faculty members through her acquired wisdom, administrative experience and her outstanding record of research, publication, and teaching.”
