Brescia volunteer makes generous gift

February 5th, 2013

London, ON – Brescia University College welcomed in the New Year with a generous gift from an active community member. This gift, and the gracious donor, will leave a 10-year legacy for Brescia students.

Liz Hewitt, Co-ordinator of Brescia’s Council of Trustees and long time volunteer in the Brescia community, announced that she will give $75,000 to the University in honour of her parents, who have instilled in her the value of hard work, community service and social justice. The Howard and Lois Hewitt Scholarship will span over a 10-year period providing one upper-year student each year with $6,000 in recognition of the recipient’s demonstrated leadership and initiative as evidenced by her involvement in co-curricular activities, volunteerism, social justice, family responsibility, or community service. “I believe in Brescia, what it stands for, and the values that it instills in every one of our graduates,” says Hewitt.

The additional $15,000 will go to support The Circle Women’s Centre at Brescia, a program and resource centre that focus on feminist spirituality, activism, and the environment. Principal of Brescia, Dr. Colleen Hanycz, says, “We are especially grateful to Liz, not only for this generous gift but for her continued support as a volunteer and a model of leadership in the Brescia community. The impact of her gifts will be significant in enabling many young leaders to complete their degrees at Brescia, but also in supporting The Circle Women’s Centre in its critical community work.”

Hewitt hopes that the gift will encourage others to give what they can and goes on to say, “Every gift, large or small, matters and every gift, large or small, makes a difference.” The Howard and Lois Hewitt Scholarship will be awarded for the first time in the fall of 2013 and will be issued to a full-time Brescia student entering second, third, or fourth year.
