FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

London, ON – Representatives from the International Federation for Home Economics (IFHE) gathered at the United Nations in New York City from February 10-19, 2020, to attend the 58th Session of the Commission for Social Development. The discussion focused on affordable housing and protection systems to review policies in strengthening and upholding provisions to lessen women who are homeless.

Brescia University College is proud to have supported Adjunct Research Professor and Professional Home Economist (PHEc.), Dr. Peggy O’Neil, Ph.D, who was a part of this discussion in New York. Dr. O’Neil shares, “Women’s land rights are essential to human progress. Everyone needs a place to create a life—to flourish.”

During her time in New York, Dr. O’Neil and members of the IFHE discussed the critical issue of responsible investment that incorporates social and environmental factors, specifically related to social sustainability and women’s land rights. Part of the discussion also focused on the “Stand for her Land Campaign,” which promotes gender equality by working to strengthen land rights for women around the world.

Dr. O’Neil was proud to represent Brescia during this once-in-a-lifetime experience with the United Nations knowing that their voices were heard: “Individual households have the power to bring peace and change to the world.” Dr. O’Neil was happy to see people working together to bring change, and even saw similarities between the United Nations and Brescia’s mission of having a truly global student community.
