Dr. Mumm’s international academic career has spanned more than 20 years. She started as an Assistant Professor at York University, before joining The Open University in England where, during her ten year tenure she moved from lecturer to head of department, beginning her career as a talented academic administrator.  Prior to joining Queen’s University in 2013, Dr. Mumm served as Dean of Arts and Science at Mount Saint Vincent University, Halifax, and Pro Vice-Chancellor, College of Humanities and Social Sciences at Massey University, New Zealand.

She was raised on a sheep farm in Saskatchewan, Canada and studied British history at the University of Saskatchewan and the University of Sussex, England, where she was a Commonwealth Scholar.  Dr. Mumm is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and has published three books and numerous articles in her area of research and is working on a fourth book on the history of organizations for young working women in 19th century Britain.

“I am honoured and humbled to be appointed Brescia’s 12th Principal,” says Dr. Mumm. “Brescia has a long and rich history as Canada’s only women’s university, and I am excited to contribute to the growth and development of the next generation of women leaders.”

“Dr. Mumm’s research in and commitment to social justice issues and supporting the development of women in leadership are closely aligned with Brescia’s mission of preparing our graduates to lead with wisdom, justice and compassion in a changing world,” says MacKinnon.  “As Brescia prepares to celebrate its centennial anniversary in 2019, we look forward to seeing how the University will evolve under her leadership.”
