Geena Davis Headlines Inaugural BresciaLEAD Awards

News Release
October 1, 2015

London, ON – On April 7, 2016, Academy Award winning actor and gender equality advocate Geena Davis will headline the inaugural BresciaLEAD Awards. This national award celebration is designed to honour exceptional women leaders and organizations from coast-to-coast-to-coast that embody Brescia’s values of leading with wisdom, justice and compassion in a changing world.  The event, occurring at the London Convention Centre, will honour women leaders and organizations in four distinct categories.

Familiar to movie-goers for her roles in films such as Beetlejuice, Thelma and Louise, A League of Their Own, and The Accidental Tourist, Davis will provide the keynote address at Brescia’s foundational event, speaking on the empowerment of girls and women worldwide. In 2008, Davis founded the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media, an organization that seeks to improve gender equality and reduce negative stereotyping in the media.

“We are so pleased to have Geena Davis as our keynote speaker at the inaugural BresciaLEAD Awards,” says Cathy Vitkauskas, Vice-Principal Advancement. “Not only is she an accomplished Award winning actress, she is also an effective activist and role model for our students and for women world-wide.”

The BresciaLEAD Awards are presented in four different categories. The Lifetime Award honours a woman who has demonstrated exceptional leadership throughout her lifetime. The Emerging Award recognizes a woman with a new and innovative voice, currently making an impact on her community. The Activist Award will be presented to a woman with an unwavering commitment to social justice, who has applied creative thinking to solve problems.  The Distinction Award honours an organization that empowers women by creating conditions for women to thrive in positions of leadership.

Interim Principal, Dr. Donna Rogers, is thrilled with the creation of these national awards, stating, “Brescia has always taken great pride in educating and developing tomorrow’s women leaders. By establishing the BresciaLEAD Awards, we are able to present inspiring role models for our current students, while celebrating accomplished women leaders at a national level.”
