London, ON – On April 23rd the London and District Construction Association (LDCA) awarded Brescia’s Clare Hall Residence and Mercato Dining Pavilion complex with top honours. The complex received gold in the “Institutional over $20 million” category at the Project Excellence Awards. The project was nominated by complex contractors Hayman Construction – Ontario’s oldest construction firm. Awards were handed out in 8 categories, with over 21 nominations.

The LDCA provides leadership to general contractors, trade contractors, manufacturers and suppliers of construction material in the construction industry. The Project Excellence Awards celebrate the best in industrial, commercial, and institutional construction in the region.

Brian Hayman, Vice-President of Hayman Construction, notes, “It was a privilege partnering with Brescia, and their architectural firm Cornerstone Architecture, in bringing their vision of an incomparable residence complex to life. At Hayman Construction, we have provided quality construction and attentive service for over 140 years. We are ecstatic to see the LDCA recognize this excellent local project.”

Brescia’s $31.1 million project was announced in September 2011, broke ground in April 2012, and celebrated its official unveiling in September 2013. The Clare Hall residence is a modern 300-bed facility for students and includes the Mercato, a state-of-the-art Marché-style dining pavilion. In the summer, the complex hosts banquets and room rentals for weddings and events. In terms of the environmental impact, the building received Five Green Globes, which is the highest possible environmental rating to evaluate and rate the energy and environmental design of a building. This is Brescia’s largest building project to date and responds to the 2010-2015 strategic plan, Living Leadership, to increase student population by 20% in five years.

Liz Hewitt, Chair of Brescia’s Board of Trustees, states, “Brescia is proud to be home to a stunning, eco-friendly, and now award-winning example of architectural and construction excellence.  We are thrilled that Hayman was awarded with this well-deserved honour.”

Brescia Principal, Dr. Colleen Hanycz, is delighted with this recognition, noting, “With the opening of our new complex, we have achieved our objectives of housing our increased student population, and further modernizing our facilities. We take great pride in having a first-rate complex that provides comfort and safety to our students. We had a wonderful partnership with both Cornerstone Architecture and Hayman Construction, and could not be more pleased with the result.”
