FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

LONDON, ON – Brescia will play host to a screening of 25%: A Documentary, which addresses the issue of women in politics. As Canada’s only women’s university, it is fitting that Brescia would host the evening event, which hopes to see close to 100 people in attendance.

The viewing of the documentary will be followed by a panel discussion about the film. Panelists include: former London mayor Anne Marie DeCicco-Best; Councillor-Elect for Ward 13 Tanya Park; and Jenan Jeha, a student at Brescia. Dr. Paul Barker, a professor in political science at Brescia, says, “At Brescia we teach the importance of female leadership and empowerment within a variety of professions and industries. This documentary provides a message that will resonate with many of our students.”

The City of London produced the documentary by web.isod.es, featuring political leaders from across Canada. Adam Caplan, director of the documentary, says, “web.isod.es was delighted to be invited on a journey of discovery that introduced us to voices from across Canada – women and men, youth and experience, and of all political stripes. We hope audiences will be inspired to join these voices as they work to bring equality to Canadian politics.”

The 25% represents the percentage of elected positions held by women at all three levels of government. This number symbolizes the woeful under-representation of female politicians in Canada and elsewhere. The City of London is one of the six communities in Canada selected to participate in the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) Head Start for Young Women Program. This program engages Canadian municipalities to encourage young women’s participation in politics and civic life.

The screening of 25% takes place at Brescia on Wednesday, November 5 at 7:00 p.m. in Room 136 of the Mother St. James Building. Parking and admission to the event are free.
