FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
London, ON – Girls LEAD summer camp at Brescia is in the midst of another successful year and, while almost at full capacity for every session of camp this summer, spaces are still available for the July 28 – August 8 session.
The program has flourished partially because of the unique experience the camp offers, which includes emphasis on developing and enhancing leadership skills among young girls. Campers are able to use the lessons they’ve learned as tools in their communities. Samantha Hayes, Girls LEAD Camp Co-ordinator explains, “Brescia’s Girls LEAD summer camp is an engaging and inspiring program, which focuses on leadership development, healthy living, and making a difference within the community. Our mission is to encourage campers to make decisions, take responsibility for their actions, collaborate and communicate with each other, and make positive change in the world. The camps also enhance self confidence for our young campers.”
The July 28 – August 8 camp will run two sessions, one for female Intermediate campers in Grades 5 & 6 and the other for Senior campers who are in Grades 7 & 8. The cost of the session for both age groups is $435 and the camp will run from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday (with the exception of Monday, August 4). An additional cost of $80 is optional for 8:00 a.m. drop off and 5:00 p.m. pick-up.
With Brescia being the only women’s university in Canada, it is no surprise that the camp maintains a strong focus on female leadership. Samantha adds, “This year we also have our Girls CAN days, where we will host females who work in male-dominated professions such as firefighting and policing. We will also welcome MP Peggy Sattler to the camp on July 18, to share insights on women in leadership.”
The program consists of five sections for girls entering Grades 3 and 4 (Junior), Grades 5 and 6 (Intermediate), and Grades 7 and 8 (Senior). This allows for an experience that caters to the unique needs of the campers at specific stages in their growth and development. For the Junior campers, Girls LEAD focuses on promoting healthy self-awareness and the development of positive social skills. For Intermediate campers emphasis is on self discovery and positive thinking and for Senior campers the focus is placed on self-reflection and goals around who they want to become.
Since the launch in 2008, more than 500 girls have benefitted from the camps.
