FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Bridgetown, Barbados – Brescia University College from London, Canada will host a Girls LEAD Barbados Celebration on July 11 to mark four years of the Girls LEAD camp in Barbados. Girls LEAD, which began in 2010 on the island, is a camp for girls that supports eleven-year-old females in exploring their own leadership potential in a positive, welcoming, and empowering environment. The camp has welcomed 90 Barbadian campers throughout the last four years and the celebration on July 11 will include many past campers, counsellors, alumnae, sponsors, and supporters of Girls LEAD.

Dr. Colleen Hanycz, Principal at Brescia, who will also be on hand for the event, explains, “This is not only a day to celebrate our campers and their accomplishments but it is also an opportunity to thank our sponsors. The overwhelming success of Girls LEAD Barbados would not be possible without our sponsors: Trident Insurance Company Limited; Summit International Bank Limited; Barbados National Bank; and the Ontario Association of International Educators. These organizations have assisted in offsetting the participation costs for our campers, and, in turn, each has demonstrated a commitment to leadership development for young women in Barbados.”

Although Girls LEAD Barbados camp will not run this summer, there is hope for a return to full programming in 2015, pending sponsorship support.

Camp programming is divided into the following three streams: promoting physical and mental health; enhancing self-awareness and building self-confidence; connecting with others; and making change. Campers participate in outdoor activities, active games, discussion, and healthy food preparation. Programming for Girls LEAD is inspired by Brescia’s Foods and Nutrition program and academic disciplines such as Community Development and Leadership.

The Girls LEAD celebration event in Barbados will take place on Friday, July 11, beginning at 3:30 p.m. at Ursuline Convent School. For more information on Girls LEAD visit http://bresciau.ca/about/community/summer-camps/girls-lead-international/.
