News Release

London, ON – December 6, 2013 marks the 24th  anniversary of the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence against Women. Established in 1991 by the Parliament of Canada, this day commemorates the deaths of 14 young women who were tragically murdered because of their gender by an enraged man at École Polytechnique in Montreal on December 6, 1989.

The Circle Women’s Centre and Brescia University College have together commemorated the deaths of these young women every year since this tragedy occurred. The Circle Women’s Centre is a unique program and resource centre focusing on feminist spirituality, ecology, and social justice at Brescia University College, Canada’s only all women’s university.

All Londoners are invited to join us for the following commemorative event in the Auditorium located at Brescia University College on Friday, December 6th, at Noon – Ritual of Re-Membering at Brescia Auditorium, hosted by The Circle Women’s Centre and Brescia University College

Individuals and workplaces can honour this day by observing a minute of silence at 11:00 a.m. on December 6, “to have a special thought for all the women and girls who live daily with the threat of violence or who have died as a result of deliberate acts of gender-based violence and to consider actions that we can each do personally and collectively to prevent and eliminate all forms of violence against women.” Now is the time for action; now is the time for change.

Since December 6, 1989 hundreds more women have continued to disappear and lose their lives in our country because of their gender. These are tragic losses for their families and our communities.  One death is too many. We need to continue to be vigilant in ensuring that violence against women remains a priority for all of us. Brescia, through this annual service of remembering, hope to maintain a heightened awareness of violence against women.
