News Release

London, ON –On Saturday, November 30th women from diverse backgrounds across Ontario will compete for a one-year full academic scholarship to Brescia University College. The half-day event will be held on campus at Brescia.

The Take the Lead public speaking contest welcomes females in Grades 11 and 12 to participate in a one-of-a-kind contest, which is being hosted for the sixth time since 2009. The contest grew by 138% over last year in attendance and provides young women with an opportunity to develop their leadership potential. Brescia will also host 35 female judges, many of whom are female community leaders from the London community that will help decide who receives first prize.

Last year’s winner and first-year Brescia student Janice Lam, explains, “It was the atmosphere of the contest at Brescia that really helped make my (post-secondary) decision. I could envision myself there because of how comfortable I felt on campus that day.”

Contestants will be travelling to Brescia from as far as Thunder Bay for this year’s competition, and will speak about “women who empower others through leadership.” The panel of judges will be composed of leaders in local education, communications, and members of the Brescia community.

Brescia Principal Dr. Colleen Hanycz says, “Take the Lead provides these young women with the opportunity to illustrate what leadership means to them. Many of the contestants end up attending Brescia and are prime examples of leadership empowered. Whether or not they ultimately study at Brescia, we are convinced they benefit from this event; it directly assists with their development as the leaders of tomorrow.”

Parking is free for the day and the contest will take place in the St. James Auditorium at Brescia. Students are welcome to register until Friday, November 29th. For more information, visit http://www.brescia.uwo.ca/takethelead/.
