News Release

London, ON –Students pursuing post-secondary education in London are invited to a Women’s Entrepreneurship Initiative Showcase on Wednesday, November 27th from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. at Brescia University College. The event will show women from Western University, King’s University College, Huron University College, Fanshawe College, and Brescia how they can become entrepreneurs and social entrepreneurs and how they can imagine opening their own businesses. Brescia, partnering with Western BizInc., the student incubator at Western University and Fanshawe College, will together host a vibrant and collaborative event.

The Women’s Entrepreneurship Initiative (Her WEI) is a new venture that will attempt to redress some of the challenges facing women in the world who own businesses. Spokesperson Ms. Colleen Sharen, an Associate Professor at Brescia, says of this need, “Fewer than 15% of small businesses and fewer than 8% of medium-sized businesses are owned by women. And college and university women report not being interested in entrepreneurship because it doesn’t fit their personality. We want to change that. We know that to turn the tide we need to offer strong role models, coaches, mentors, and investors to help young women start businesses.”

The Showcase on November 27th will do just that. A number of female and social entrepreneurs as well as organizations that support entrepreneurship in the London area will be on hand with literature, ideas, and words of encouragement for the assembled students. John Pollock, the Director of Biz Inc., says, “We are very excited to showcase our student entrepreneurs to the wider community and to open some new doors for mentorship.”

The event is free of charge as is parking. Light refreshments will be served and students will have the opportunity to learn more about local businesses run by women, to ask questions, and make connections. This is the first of two special events that Her WEI will host this year. For more information and to register, visit http://brescia.uwo.ca/HerWEI.html.
