May 13, 2013

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

London, ON – Well known author, educator, and psychologist Dr. JoAnn Deak will visit Brescia University College on Wednesday, May 22nd , to present Decoding the Girl, a fascinating lecture on the way girls learn. By discussing her research on the healthy development of girls as it relates to family, school, and environmental patterns, Deak will provide valuable insight into the learning differences between boys and girls as well as the advantages of an all-women’s education.

In her book Girls will be Girls, Deak speaks about the importance of understanding how girls learn and notes, “All of us want our girls to thrive. We want them to live lives in which they feel competent, confident, and connected to others, and to the grand scheme of life.” Deak goes on to say, “That’s not something we can give girls or do for them. However, as parents and teachers and other adults who care, we can cultivate opportunities for girls to experience themselves this way.” Deak’s upcoming lecture will be her second time visiting Brescia. Of her last lecture, Principal Dr. Colleen Hanycz says, “Dr. Deak was both engaging and insightful. Her ability to present research on female learning in an accessible and understandable way makes her upcoming lecture one that any parent, teacher, or educator would benefit from hearing.”

Deak has significant experience in female education. In addition to teaching in elementary school, Deak has partnered with, and consulted for, many universities in the United States, including Harvard and Kent State. Deak has been awarded the Woman of Achievement Award by the National Coalition of Girls’ Schools, was given the first Female Educator of the Year Award by Orchard House School, and the Outstanding Partner for Girls Award from Clemson University. As a result of her research, Deak has authored several books about female education. Two of her books, Your Fantastic Elastic Brain and How Girls Thrive, will be available for purchase at the event.

The event will take place on Wednesday, May 22 from 7:30 to 9:00 a.m. in Brescia’s Auditorium. Tickets are $29 and include a gourmet breakfast created by Brescia’s own Red Seal chef.
