London, ON –The Council of Trustees at Brescia University College is pleased to announce that Dr. Colleen Hanycz has been re–appointed to a second term as Principal. Dr. Hanycz’s four–year renewal will commence on July 1, 2013.
Under Dr. Hanycz’s leadership since 2008, Brescia has experienced a period characterized by growing success in the recruitment and retention of high–quality students, faculty and staff, along with the development of innovative academic programs and the completion of a showcase Residence & Dining Pavilion due to open this September that is both environmentally progressive and architecturally unique among residential spaces.
Speaking on behalf of Brescia’s Council of Trustees, Co-ordinator Liz Hewitt noted, “Since her arrival at Brescia, Dr. Hanycz has worked tirelessly to emphasize and promote Brescia’s unique position as Canada’s only women’s university and its core mission of engaging and developing young women as leaders.” Ms. Hewitt further commented, “Under Dr. Hanycz’s leadership, we have witnessed an increased profile for Brescia, a significant growth in our student population, strong academic planning and sound financial stewardship. She has championed a bold strategic plan that aligns with Brescia’s Ursuline values and positions Brescia for a bright, successful and sustainable future. Dr. Hanycz is a tremendous role model and mentor for our students and we are happy that she has agreed to remain with Brescia and we look forward to another four years with her at the helm.”
Dr. Hanycz says of her time at Brescia, “The passion that I have for Brescia continues to be driven by a desire to serve our students, and in doing so, to serve the broader society. I remain convinced of the need for women’s educational institutions, especially those like Brescia that take its mission of forming leaders so seriously. Our world continues to hunger for the innovative, relational and collaborative forms of leadership that women are best equipped to practice, and we need institutions like Brescia to ensure that critical leadership formation is ongoing.” Dr. Hanycz notes the added value afforded to Brescia students by Brescia’s affiliation with Western University, a leading research–intensive institution, and the other two Western affiliates, Huron University College and King’s University College.
Dr. Hanycz commented, “It has been my privilege to build on almost 100 years of fine leadership at Brescia and I am honoured to have been asked to serve a second term as Principal. I continue to be inspired by Brescia’s faculty, staff, volunteers, alumnae, and of course by the amazing women whom we serve as our students. I look forward to the coming four years with great anticipation.”
Prior to her arrival in London in 2008, Dr. Colleen Hanycz joined the faculty of Osgoode Hall Law School at York University in 2003, following several years in practice as a securities and employment litigator in Toronto. While at Osgoode, her areas of research and teaching focus were Civil Procedure, Dispute Resolution and Legal Negotiation. In addition to her work at Brescia, Dr. Hanycz continues her scholarship and teaches in Osgoode’s graduate program in law. This year, she was recognized for her contributions to education and the broader community through the awarding of a Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal. She sits on the Board of Directors of the London Health Sciences Centre, chairing its Governance and Nominating Committees. She is also currently the Chair of the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities of Canada, and this year served on the Campaign Cabinet of the London–Middlesex United Way Campaign as its Co–Chair of the Education Sector. She and her husband, Peter Hanycz, spend their free time chauffeuring three busy children to their many activities around London and beyond.
