Brescia and London Life help young girls to Take the LEAD

August 8, 2012

London, ON – August 8, 2012

Thanks to a contribution through the national corporate citizenship program of Great-West Life, London Life and Canada Life, eight campers who would otherwise be unable to participate, will attend Brescia University College’s Girls LEAD summer camp.

Brescia’s Principal, Dr. Colleen Hanycz, has seen first-hand what community involvement can bring to a camp such as Girls LEAD, and says, “We are especially grateful to our sponsor, London Life, a longtime supporter of Brescia. They recognize the critical role of nurturing leadership in young women as preparation for assuming roles in society.”

Over the last decade, working with Brescia, London Life has championed the university college’s annual Breakfast for Bursaries fundraiser, as founding sponsor. The company has been a strong supporter of bursaries for young women who could not otherwise afford a university education. This year, they continue to show their support to young women through the Girls LEAD camp sponsorship.

“We are pleased to contribute to the Girls LEAD camp and help lay the foundation for our future leaders in our community,” says Jan Belanger, Assistant Vice-President, Community Affairs, Great-West Life, London Life and Canada Life.

Girls LEAD (Leadership, Education, and Development) was developed in 2008, and is an exciting program designed to support young women in their growth and development. Girls who complete this summer day camp connect with others, celebrate themselves, and learn how to influence positive change in the world around them. The camp runs on Brescia’s campus from July 3 to August 10. The Girls LEAD camp was one of the first initiatives that grew out of the Institute for Women in Leadership (iWIL) in 2007 as a way to extend opportunities for leadership development to future female leaders. Over the past four years, more than 240 young girls have benefitted from the camps.
