Southern Ontario’s premier girls’ leadership camp looks forward to a big fourth summer

April 25, 2012

London, ON – Spots are quickly filling for Brescia University College’s GirlsLEAD day camp, summer 2012. The fourth summer is shaping up to be bigger and better than ever as Brescia prepares for five more sessions full of fun, friendship, and learning – all catered to London’s young emerging female leaders.

Launched in 2008 in partnership with Brescia’s Institute for Women in Leaderships (iWil), the GirlsLEAD Summer Camp program is a unique opportunity within London for young girls Grades 3-8 to connect with and learn from each other.  The camp’s leadership focus creates a strong foundation for building self assurance and self respect within all participants. With three levels: Junior (Grades 3-4) running July 16 to July 27, Intermediate (Grades 5-6) running July 3 to July 13 and July 30 to August 10, and Senior (Grades 7-8) running July 16 to July 27 and July 30 to August 10, GirlsLEAD is a fully-tailored, action-packed two weeks.

As Canada’s only women’s university, it is important for Brescia University College to host a summer camp specifically designed to immerse young girls in leadership opportunities and experiences.

Co-ordinator of the GirlsLEAD camp, Pam Core, says, “In our society today, girls and young women grow up inundated by media and other messages that promote unhealthy ideals associated with body image, leadership, and self esteem. The Girls LEAD Camp at Brescia provides an inclusive and creative camp environment in which girls are accepted and celebrated for their uniqueness. Through recreation, media, art, music, and many other avenues of activity, girls develop increased self-confidence and self esteem by learning about leadership, communication, and positive female role models.”

Dr. Colleen Hanycz, Principal of Brescia University College, adds, “Today all levels of business, art, and science are dependent on good leaders. Leadership is the result of confidence, knowledge, and the strength to step up to the opportunity. GirlsLEAD is designed specifically with this in mind.”

Camp subsidies are available through generous donations from the community and in partnership with Project C.A.M.P (YMCA of Western, Ontario).
