Adria Vasil to empower women to lead in environmental protection in International Women’s Day lecture at Brescia

February 24, 2011

London, ON – Bestselling author Adria Vasil will share the  story of her rise to national acclaim as Canada’s “Green Dear Abby” at the  International Women’s Day lecture of the Sophia Series at Brescia University  College on Thursday, March 3, 2011 at 7:30 p.m.

In a lively lecture entitled, “How women are leading the  charge to protect our planet – and how you can, too!” Vasil will tell the  audience how to detoxify themselves and the world around them.

Vasil has been writing the practical and quick-witted ECOHOLIC advice column for NOW magazine in Toronto since 2004 and has authored two  bestselling books based on the column: ECOHOLIC in 2007, and ECOHOLIC HOME in 2009.

“Our homes are ground zero for a lot of green crimes,” Vasil  says. In a CBC Radio interview after Earth Day on April 28, 2010, she talked  about how Canadians bring numerous dangerous chemicals into our homes on and in the  products we buy, which is not always the fault of the consumer.

She reported that products with labels making green claims  have increased by 176 per cent in two years. However, one study revealed that  98 per cent of manufacturers of products sold in big-box stores are misleading  the public in claiming that their products are environmentally-friendly. Vasil  advises consumers to ask, “Is this green claim to good to be true?”

Vasil has been an advocate for the earth, women’s issues,  and human rights since her teens. You may have seen or heard the author on The  National, CBC Newsworld, Canada  AM, Global, BNN, MTV Canada as well as countless print and radio publications  promoting green living.

The Circle Women’s  Centre is sponsoring Vasil’s lecture and an information and volunteer fair  featuring local eco-organizations and volunteers from 6:45 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. in  the foyer of the Brescia  auditorium.

Everyone is welcome to attend the IWD lecture and  information fair on March 3. Those present will also get a sneak peek at a  fashion show that will be part of the EcoFeminist Vendor Fair to be held at Brescia on Saturday,  March 5, 2011. The Circle and the Sexual Assault Centre  London are co-hosting the event to make available socially-conscious clothes, accessories  and resources from local sustainable-fashion businesses.

Free parking will be available and donations will be  gratefully accepted at the door for both events. For more information about the  IWD lecture, please visit www.brescia.uwo.ca/thecircle.  Facebook users may learn more about the EcoFeminist Vendor Fair by visiting www.facebook.com/TheCircleWC.
