Sisters of St. Joseph Take on Poverty

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

June 18, 2008

London, ON – The Sisters of St. Joseph have donated $500,000 to be divided between Fanshawe College ($350,000) and Brescia University College ($150,000). These bursaries will enable women in financial need to access higher education.

“We hope these bursaries will help women to experience themselves as full participants in shaping a future for themselves and their children,” said Sister Margo Ritchie, Congregational Leader of the Sisters of St. Joseph.

The Sisters of St. Joseph bursary is available to female students who are sole support mothers and face barriers linked to financial self sufficiency. It is a direct step in addressing poverty in London and creating strong community leaders for the future.

“This generous donation will have enormous impact on disadvantaged women in London,” said Theresa Topic, Principal of Brescia University College. “They will have much needed support to further their education and build better lives for themselves and their families.”

The bursary funds would be a multi year commitment, depending on the educational progress of the student and would cover educational costs such as tuition, books and supplies, transportation, and other basic expenses such as child care.

“The Sisters of St. Joseph have demonstrated a tremendous commitment to not only supporting women in need, but also ensuring their success in life through education and continuous learning,” said Dr. Howard Rundle, President of Fanshawe College.

This donation will be matched by Ontario Trust for Student Support (OTSS). This donation will result in more than $1,300,000 in funding for post secondary education in London.

“Once again, the Sisters of St. Joseph have demonstrated their commitment to improving opportunities for those facing the greatest challenges,” said Minister Deb Matthews. “This is an extraordinary donation that will transform the lives of women and their children.”

This gift represents incredible leadership and commitment by the Sisters to the issue of poverty.
